Gotta Catch The Pretty Ones

Chapter Seventeen

Winston’s conversation with the school appeared to clear up a great number of problems. As he explained it to Sara and Penny later the school agreed to set Lars back a year and credit him the payment he had already made. Family problems like this would explain his suddenly falling abilities and grades and now he would have five months before the next class started but if he missed his first day he would be out of the program. Much to Sara’s discomfort the older man gave her a bear hug, thanking her for her help. She and Penny wisely left before the Winston clan descended upon Judge Lomus with a very frightened Sissy in tow. It was not going to be pretty and neither woman wanted any part of it.

Constable Hendricks caught both of them as they exited the building. “Is there a problem Constable” Sara asked.

“Mahbe. Mahbe not. Remember that Waterdown man. What got fifty years?”

“Very well. Evil man, he glared at every witness as though he could make them go away with just the power of his mind” Sara admitted. “Scared me too.”

“Yep, that’s the monster. He broke outta jail. Note he left behin says he’s gonn get ‘em all. All tha people what turned against him starting with that pretty girl ‘e wanted.”

Sara sucked in a breath. “Then we better have the Martine’s look at strengthening our home. We haven’t any weapons.” She turned to Penny. “Go see them Penny, right now please” she asked.

Penny nodded yes before taking off. She liked the Martine’s and Mrs. Martine had such an interesting book of special furniture in her office safe. She was especially interested in a rather fancy cage at the moment.

“Yah don’t hav’ ah phone, do yah” Constable Hendricks asked.

“There is one in the kitchen with an extension in the shop” Sara admitted. “But they are not hooked up as we haven’t been able to afford such a luxury yet.”

“Not ah luxury noh” the man warned her. “Till this animal’s back in jail ah’ll authorize ahn emergency hookup. Town can’t ford tah lose two citizens as honest ahn helpful as you too.”

He tipped his hat, walking away while leaving Sara frightened for Penny. A crazy man, out for blood. “I need a gun” she admitted to herself. “But I haven’t touched one since I started Tech school.” She shook herself. Riker’s sold weapons for hunting and self protection. Maybe they had an old revolver that she could afford.

Or a large bore shotgun.
