Chapter Thirty-Two

“Your wound is healing very well Mrs. Richards” the elderly doctor announced. “I think we can send you home in a day or two then in a year we will see about the prostatic.”

Sara’s eyes opened wide. “A year? Doctor, I thought it would be done by now.”

“So do most people Mrs. Richards” the white haired old man agreed. “Your wound has to heal completely and that does take a lot of time, right now the skin is as delicate as a babies. Your bones are recovering nicely thanks to Doctor Winters matrix but they are still growing. It all still takes time. All the new bone and nerve tissue has to heal around that interface pod we implanted. You have to be comfortable using your left hand, as your prosthetic will never be as strong as your original hand. Both your physical and mental health have to improve as well. Believe it or not Mrs. Richards, no matter what you may think I know for a fact that you are barely holding on at the moment. So in a year you’ll come down and we will attach your new hand. Lets not forget young Lady, it takes time to build a prostatic hand. They don’t just sit on shelves gathering dust while awaiting use like a Pokeball does.”

“I see, I guess. I better get packed then.”

“How long will it take for your wife to get here” the good Doctor asked.

“Nine days by bus. It’s the mountains, even in the best of weather it’s a morass of secondary roads, most of which need servicing. Not to forget the bus stops at every little crossroads, that’s the real time eater. If we could afford a car it would only be a three day trip. Less if the railroad came closer than a hundred miles of Stonehome and even there it doesn’t have a stop.”

The Doctor nodded in agreement. “Then it is a good thing we sent her word. I am certain that she will be here very soon.”

“Penny? Coming... That’s wonderful” Sara said before looking at the bandaged stump at the end of her arm. “Maybe. Doctor, what if she doesn’t want me anymore.”

“Why shouldn’t I want you” a very familiar voice asked from behind the sitting woman. “Just because you lost a hand? Love, as long as what makes you you, your stuck with me.”

Sara turned around as best she could in the heavy hospital chair. “But” she automatically covered her stump with her left hand.

“Better or worse, sickness or health” Penny moved quickly to her sitting wife. “And we have a project to finish as I recall. Your still the brains you know. Lars has taught me how to dismantle and rebuild a Pokeball while you’ve been getting better so I’ll be your hands.”

“The shop...”

Penny smiled into those eyes she loved so much. “Is being covered by Lars. He can’t get into the house so your sexy secrets are safe, unless you dump me then I’m telling the papers about that special underwear of yours.” Leaning closer she whispered “Its been months Sara, I have itches only you can scratch.”

Sara’s face blossomed red, then she shook her head no. “Your incorrigible.”

“I am that.” Looking up at the Doctor she winked at the man. “How long before I can take my playtoy home for fancies?” she asked.

“Tomorrow morning” the doctor answered. “Or you can sign her out today. How far is the nearest full hospital from your town Penny.”

“My sisters home town. Three hundred plus miles, about a nine hour bus ride. They never ran the trains our way, we are just too small and the Terebar desert is to our East” the brunette answered. “Our clinic has a visiting Doctor but she only shows up twice a month. We are just too small and too far out of the way for real civilization but its nice and quiet in Stonehome.”

“I want that wound checked every time your Doctor comes by. If there are...”

Penny cut the older man off. “You explained everything in your office, I have the papers and supplies that you gave me. Believe me Doctor I am not going to let anything happen to my Sara again. Ever. We have a phone and believe me sir, if something goes wrong I will be calling you no matter what the cost is.”

“Don’t I get a say in this?” Sara asked from her chair.

Penny turned her attention on her wife. “You always have a say my love. I’m sorry. I’m just so... so..”

“Worried” Sara completed for her. “Tell you what, lets go to my room and get what few things I have then check out. We can catch the night bus and be home in nine days. Meanwhile you can catch me up on everything that has happened. Okay?”

“Your sure your up to it?” the brunette asked.

“Doctor?” Sara asked.

“I can see no reason to hold you here any longer” the white hairs man admitted. “If you promise to take your medications, see a real doctor twice a month until your wound is fully healed. Then yes, you can go.”

“Everything?” Penny asked sheepishly.

“Everything” Sara countered in a stern voice. She could hear the good doctor chuckle softly. “Doctor? If you would be so kind as to sign the release papers I will get out of your hair.”
