Chapter Thirty-Six

In the following months though Penny was unable to follow her preferred hobby. Sara made a point of keeping her hunting wife too busy helping her to plan any trips. Though it appeared that the brunette librarian had great skill in her new chosen craft, the chance of her getting caught terrified Sara. Learning how to repair Pokeballs and dealing with Sara’s slowly improving health made certain that the younger woman had little free time with which to travel. It wasn’t until late Fall that the brunette found herself with a chance to hunt again. One afternoon after she had gathered the mail Penny found herself holding a rather fat envelope addressed to her wife. Wondering what it was she went into the kitchen where Sara was having some soup. As always now, Penny slit open each envelope so that Sara could more easily remove the contents. When she took the mail to her wife Sara was still eating lunch.

“You’re getting better with your left hand” Penny noted, laying the few envelopes and two still unopened packages by her wifes place.

“You, my sexy wife, are an excellent teacher” Sara countered. “Anything interesting in today’s mail?”

“I have a library journal and a letter from my mother. Nothing else” Penny answered. “What you have I don’t know. I just open them, you read them.”

“I wish you would read them, at least the bills.”

Penny laughed. “You make the money, you pay the bills, I’m just your bed bunny.” She giggled again, sitting down to fix her own lunch. “You may still be a touch weak my love but you nail me to that mattress with that toy of yours every night.”

“You bought it” Sara shot back. “Along with all the other ‘toys’ we have so don’t complain when you get pegged to the floor.”

“Tonight?” The brunette asked hopefully.

“Oh yes. Tonight” Sara promised as she sorted her mail. Abruptly she held one envelope up to her eyes. It was a tad fat just for a letter though. “Interesting. Why would Tarragon Incorporated be sending me a letter? By now they have copies of all the reports. I know that the investigation is over but not what they found out.” Deftly she sat the envelope on her kitchen table, opening it with two fingers then sliding them in to grab the contents. Her thumb easily held the envelope until it fell away. Using her leather covered stump she held the papers down while she opened them.

“Just reading the mail reminds me how much we all need both our hands” she admitted to Penny. “I’ll be glad to get the prostatic. I hear its not as good as a real hand but its amazingly better than a just a stump. Now, lets read what these gentlemen want.”

She read silently for a little, finding that the three pages were a brief report on what the company had found but not what caused the defective batteries to get away from them. As she finished the third page she realized that there was something attached to the fourth and final page. Flipping it over she discovered that the fourth page was a hand written apology from the company owner. That, and a cheque.

“Oh my dear God” she gasped, reading what the cheque was written for. With her hand shaking she gave the page to her wife. “Read the letter first, then read the cheque” she managed to say. Sitting back in her chair she watched Penny’s reaction. When her wife’s mouth dropped open Sara giggled. “You’ll catch flies that way” she warned.

Reaching up with her free hand Penny pushed her chin up, closing her mouth with a delicate click. “Uh.. Yeah” the librarian agreed. “This is real? Sara, I have never seen so many zero’s on a cheque.”

“I don’t know” Sara admitted. “I guess so but we will have to take it to the bank to be certain. If it is real though we have to take it to the bank in Warren Hill. It has the nearest Empire bank and I don’t think either Stonehome Savings or the Framers Co-Opt Savings and Loan could touch this. Besides, even if they could I don’t want to trust this all to small banks. If it is real though, do you know what else we can do?”

“Visit my sister?” Penny asked. “She’s never seen you lover and I really think it’s time you met her.”

“That too” Sara gave in. “But the Quigley’s next door have been wanting to sell their home for a few months now. They want to move to Mirror City where their children are and the Winters lots softer. Their home is a mirror image of this place and since it is right next door. Any ideas what that would mean?”

“Short walks in the rain, mud on your shoes, two homes to keep clean” Penny started before Sara hushed her.

“Ir the Guild agrees we can have a tunnel built from basement to basement Penny. That, and convert our current tower to visitors rooms. I’m limited to what I can do because this building belongs to the Guild, but a home of our own would be another matter. Besides, there are enough Pokemon hunters coming by without enough money for more than a thin soup. We could give them a place to stay one night, but they would pay for it by cleaning this place and talking to you about their adventures. You might even become a writer since you’re always putting everything down on paper.”

She gave her wife a knowing smile. “We’d lock the tunnel door of course from the inside. There would be a second door in the tunnel to my workroom. As for the second basement, you could do my special research for me there without ever being noticed. All those Pokepets reporting what it is like in a Pokeball, your observations on how the programs are affecting their minds.”

“We could move our playroom into the other basement too” Penny realized. “Great, when can we leave?”

“Sunday morning would be best” Sara decided. “Nine hours to Warren Hill, find a hotel to stay in, visit your sister. Monday morning see the Guild then a bank. If the money is real, split it. Half to investments and savings the other half in two cashiers Cheque’s. Leave Tuesday afternoon, get home that night and be able to get to Stonehome Savings at lunch. Then once the paperwork has cleared approach the Quigley’s about their home.” Sara shook her head no. “Can’t be that easy, I think we ought to plan on two extra days in Warren Hill. If nothing more than as a safety measure and time to really visit your sister.”

“Done” Penny agreed. “I’ll get Lars to cover.. No wait he’s back in school. We will just have to close the shop for a few days I guess. I’ll start packing as soon as we finish eating.”

“And Penny?” Sara asked, waiting until she was certain that her wife was looking at her. “No hunting on this trip, please?”

“Okay. This trip” Penny agreed, though she didn’t look happy about it.
