Chapter Twenty-Four
Morning breakfast brought an exhausted John to the table. For a while he ate silently, only speaking to ask for something. The one time Penny tried to ask him a question Candy shushed her. It was only when breakfast was over that he spoke. “I’d rather you stick close to Candy today” he said in a weary voice. “A young woman vanished lat night at the edges of the campground. Her boyfriend claims they had sex, then while he was sleeping she just got up and walked away.” He grunted. “Walked away and left every stitch of her clothing behind? Not likely. Still we searched half the night and there is a special squad with dogs rummaging through the area now. Since the idiot waited until early morning to say anything the winds and mist pretty much fouled up any scent traces by now.” He shook his head as though not believing what had happened.
“Who was she” Candy asked, pressing for more information as almost any wife would.
“Some girl named Marie Martinez. She and this George Brown have been going hot and heavy almost a year now it seems. They are from the West side” he finished, as if that answered everything.
“West side?” Penny asked.
“Low income, high crime rate” John supplied. “Slum area, though where these two are from is cleaner than most.
“Do you think she ran off with someone else or just slipped away as a joke” Candy asked.
“She might have” John admitted, stretching to get the kinks out of his muscles. There was a heavy pop from somewhere on his back and a blissful smile came to his face. “Needed that” he almost whispered. “Or this George found out she was spreading her legs for someone else. Remember, there are old mines in the South side of that park. Easy to pull aside a cover then drop a body down a shaft. Never see it again, even if we searched, those things go down six, seven hundred feet and most are half full of water. It would take a diver to check everywhere, its just too dangerous even if we knew exactly which shaft the body was in. Presupposing he offed the girl, which I don’t really think is possible. That boy’s kinda wimpish.”
“So George is a suspect” Penny asked.
“Everyone that knew her is a suspect” John corrected. “They had a wedding coming up, her mother says she wasn’t much thrilled about it but George had something Marie said that she needed. Marriage was apparently a better option than any other choice.”
Penny remembered that monster tube of flesh sawing in and out of Maria. Yeah, marriage was the only way to keep that thing in the family for certain.
“Right now though” John continued. “We’re treating it as either a joke or a run away. If she doesn’t come home by tomorrow morning it’s a run away.”
“But it could be a murder” Candy suggested.
“No evidence of violence, not even sex play violence unless you count that weapon that nature gave him. Ladies, the boy is as big as a horse. Now I need to get some sleep, but promise me you’ll both stick together today.”
“My word - You bet” echoed in the little room. A tiny squeal of baby humor was added to the agreement, which caused all three adults to laugh.
